Use these biodiversity and living environment resources both within the school grounds and through visits further afield to inspire a curiosity in the natural environment and encourage a positive impact on young people’s understanding of some crucial issues. 

Ages 4 - 6

  • Check out this Bug Hotel Competition for the chance to win a class set of 36 jumbo magnifiers kindly sponsored by Learning Resources Ltd.
  • Create a Small Bug Home perfect for small gardens or balconies that will provide a cosy retreat for any friendly ladybirds or bugs with this resource produced by our partner the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Use this Bug Hotel Project, also put together by RHS, to have fun making your school grounds and home garden more wildlife friendly. 
  • This Animal Seed Dispersal Game produced by Learning Through Landscapes is a playful approach to understanding how some trees use animals to disperse their seeds.
  • Use this resource to Create a Nest fit for a bird using natural materials. Birds come in all shapes and sizes and so do their nests.

Ages 7 - 11

  • Try out this pack of six activities including catching minibeasts, food chains and webs, and classification, introducing children to the World of Invertebrates.
  • Use the activity sheet to carry out some field based investigations to decide How Healthy is Your Meadow. The identification sheet will help you identify what's growing in your meadow.
  • Learn all about biodiversity, adaptations, life cycles, food chains and the wide variety of habitats found in or next to canals and rivers with this resource made by Canal and River Trust.
  • Don't forget there is still time to enter The Big Worm Hunt Competition, simply send in a photograph of the longest worm you can find, the longest submitted so far has been 32 cm long!

Ages 11 - 16

  • Use this set of inspirational, outdoor activities to help your class understand and engage with Biodiversity on your Doorstep. Suitable for teachers and others working with young people of all ages.
  • One in a series of ten posters that showcase how science and technology benefits farming. Topics include: science; technology; soil; water; Biodiversity; grassland management; animal welfare; animal feed; plants and wheat, there is also a Welsh Version.
  • This LEAF Education Biodiversity Project resource promotes farm visits where children can find out how farmers look after the farm environment and thereby encourage a wide diversity of wildlife. The activities have been produced to accompany farm and countryside visits highlighting the environmental work done by farmers today.
